Frequently Asked Questions

Special Note
Please be respectful of all public and private property and help us keep the park and adjacent areas clean.
Do not litter. Let's leave our areas at Lake Merritt looking better when we leave than when we arrived.

How can I get to March for Science Bay Area?
We encourage biking or using public transportation. The Lake Merritt BART station is an 8 minute, 1/2 mile walk away.
Other BART stations or bus routes are available to get you close to the Lake Merritt Amphitheater.
See www.douglasparking.com for commercial lots near the site. We will have a bike parking area on-site.
You can also use this link to map your trip!

Where are we marching?
March for Science Bay Area 2018 will be primarily be a Rally with Speaker Series and Science Outreach Fair.
At 2:30, those wishing to March can follow the scenic lake path. This path follows the lake shore for just over one mile to Lakeside Park, where there are opportunities to visit Children's Fairyland, Lake Merritt Bonsai Gardens, or the docks at Lake Merritt Boating Center. As you continue on the path you will have views of Lake Merritt Wildlife Sanctuary, and after another half-mile passes through the beautiful architecture of The Pergola at Lake Merritt. While the total March around Lake Merritt is about 5 miles, there are plenty of opportunities for attendees to rest, see local attractions, or access public transit.

Can I volunteer to help produce this fantastic event?
Absolutely! We can always use more volunteers with skills from PR to crowd control, first aid, photography or lifting and toting to help set-up and take-down! Please register here and our volunteer coordinators will be back with you as soon as possible!

Will this event be family friendly?
Yes, this will be a family friendly event. We have been working hard with our partners participating at March for Science Bay Area to present engagement activities which will be appropriate for all ages.

Will there be a livestream?
Yes! Seeker Media will be providing a livestream of interviews with the crowd and some of the speakers.
There will not be livestreaming of the main stage Rally, Performers, or Speaker Series.

Will this event be wheelchair accessible/ADA compliant?
Yes! We are working very hard to assure that all members of the community can attend this event.
We will have accessible restrooms and an ASL interpreter at the Main Stage program.
We will also have an ADA section for the Speaker Series program at Lake Merritt Amphitheater. The biggest obstacle to wheelchairs or other mobility devices will be the grass at Lake Merritt Amphitheater, however there are many paths in this area which assure the Rally area and Speaker Series remains accessible. The Science Outreach Fair is on the Henry Kaiser Auditorium grounds with no anticipated obstacles to access.

Will there be food?
A variety of food trucks will be dishing up tasty treats in front of the Henry Kaiser Auditorium.
This is just across Lake Merritt Blvd, where our partner booths and activities are also located.

What can I bring into the event?
In coordination with March for Science events around the nation this is a demonstration of public support for science and evidence-based policy. Bring signs of why you March for Science! Please bring your good attitude with your interest in science and it's impacts!

Always bring water when attending public events. Stay hydrated.
Seating at the rally area is limited, so if you would like to bring a folding chair that is also acceptable.
